Yask Desai is a photographer and documentary film maker whose voice resonates with conceptual clarity, purpose and human empathy. In an era where glamour and superficial finesse are often the end to which technology is put, his work takes up vital issues of our times and asks some tough questions. In a world of rapid transformation Desai focuses on steep vested interests that lie at the heart of economic inequality.
Simple yet not simplistic, his photos and films display a truly enchanting ability to look below the surface…at everything from the thought behind the glance of a street seller to the method behind the madness of a societal process. His ability to connect the dots and place issues and people in perspective makes his work especially relevant in a time where we have to wade through a lot of media clutter.
He seems to be on a journey: traveling light, seeking genuine connection with the wider world and engaging in creative inquiry. But most interestingly, he combines compassion for the human condition and a holistic intelligence with an intriguing sense of irony. He has an endearing ability to adapt and immerse himself wholeheartedly in diverse cultures and an innate knack for deciphering historical nuance.
